Surgical masks - Requirements and test methods Respiratory resistance

This European Standard was developed under a mandate given to CEN by the European Commission and the European Free Trade Association and supports basic requirements of the EU Directive 93/42/EEC.

The transmission of infectious germs during surgical procedures in operating rooms and other medical facilities can occur in several ways. Sources of infection include the noses and mouths of the surgical team. The main intended use of surgical masks is to protect patients against infectious germs coming from the nose and mouth of the staff and, in certain situations, to protect the wearer against splashes of possibly contaminated liquids.

Field of application

This European Standard specifies the design of surgical masks and the performance requirements and test procedures for them, which are intended to limit the transmission of infectious germs from personnel to patients and (in certain situations vice versa) during surgical procedures in operating rooms and other medical facilities with similar requirements. This European Standard does not apply to masks intended exclusively for the personal protection of personnel.

OP MASKS

Surgical masks, surgical masks or hygiene masks comply with EN 14683. 3 classes are distinguished in the current 2019 version:

Classification Typ I Typ II Typ IIR
Bacterial filtration efficiency (BFE) ≥95% ≥98% ≥98%
Respiratory Resistance(Pa/cm2) <40 <40 <60
Pressure of the spray resistance (kPA) not applicable not applicable ≥16,0
Microbiological purity (KBE/g) ≤30 ≤30 ≤30

Type I masks are not suitable for healthcare professionals in operating rooms or medical facilities. Type II or IIR must be used here. Type IIR is resistant to liquids.
