Surgical masks - Requirements and test methods Resistance to breathing
This European Standard has been prepared under a mandate given to CEN by the European Commission and the European Free Trade Association and supports essential requirements of EU Directive 93/42/EWG.
Transmission of infectious germs during surgical procedures in operating rooms and other medical facilities can occur by several routes. Sources of infection include the noses and mouths of the surgical team. The main intended use of surgical masks is to protect patients against infectious germs originating from the nose and mouth of personnel and, in certain situations, to protect the wearer against splashes of potentially contaminated fluids.
Field of application
This European Standard specifies the constructional design of, and performance requirements and test methods for, surgical masks intended to limit the transmission of infectious germs from personnel to patients and (in certain situations vice versa) during surgical procedures in operating rooms and other medical facilities with similar requirements. This European Standard does not apply to masks intended solely for the personal protection of personnel.
